Syrah and Roussanne: Two Iconic Grape Varieties of the Rhône Valley
Syrah and Roussanne are among the most iconic grape varieties of the Rhône Valley. Each has a distinctive identity and a remarkable ability to express its terroir, giving rise to wines that are authentic, rich, and expressive.
Syrah: Between Myth and Reality
For a long time, Syrah was surrounded by legends about its origins and was associated with places as diverse as Persia, Syria, Syracuse, and Shiraz in Iran.
Today, genetic analysis has shown that Syrah is the result of a natural crossing between Mondeuse Blanche and Dureza, two ancient grape varieties originating from the Ardèche region of France.
Historically rooted in the Northern Rhône Valley, Syrah is now one of the region’s most iconic red grape varieties. In the vineyard, it is a demanding variety with moderate yields, thriving on well-exposed slopes and cool terroirs.
Today, Syrah is widely grown around the world, particularly in Australia, Chile, Argentina, South Africa, and California, where it is especially valued for its aromatic richness and structure.
Syrah produces deeply colored wines with intense aromas of dark fruits such as blackberry and blackcurrant, accompanied by notes of pepper, violet, and spices.
Depending on the terroir and the winemaker’s approach, Syrah can produce wines that are powerful and full-bodied, or, on the contrary, softer and more refined, while always retaining an excellent aging potential.
Roussanne: Finesse and Depth
Roussanne, a white grape variety originating in the Northern Rhône Valley, is often blended with Marsanne. Its name comes from the golden-reddish hue its grapes develop as they ripen.
More delicate to cultivate, Roussanne requires careful attention due to its sensitivity to powdery mildew and gray rot.
This grape variety is particularly valued for the aromatic complexity and depth it brings to wines. On the palate, Roussanne reveals notes of white-fleshed fruits and flowers, which evolve over time toward aromas of honey and dried fruits.
On the palate, it offers beautiful roundness, elegant structure, and remarkable length.
